Which vehicles need a Swiss e-vignette?
The Swiss motorway vignette is required on national roads of the first and second class – motorways and expressways – for motor vehicles and trailers up to 3.5 t. Since August 2023 it has also been available in electronic form: the e-vignette is linked to the licence plate, so nothing needs to be stuck on the windscreen. Unlike in many other countries, a trailer or caravan needs its own vignette, and motorcycles need one too. Vehicles over 3.5 t are not covered by the vignette and pay the heavy vehicle charge instead.

Before you buy: what to know about the Swiss e-vignette
Passenger cars, vans, motorhomes and minibuses up to 3.5 t need the vignette, and so do motorcycles. Trailers and caravans up to 3.5 t need a separate vignette registered to their own licence plate, so a car with a caravan requires two. There is just one vignette type for all categories – the annual vignette – so when ordering you only choose the category and the date from which you need it.
Switzerland has no day, week or month vignettes – even a single transit requires the annual vignette. Its validity is fixed rather than counted from the purchase date: each vignette year runs from 1 December to 31 January fourteen months later, so a vignette bought in summer expires on the same day as one bought in December. The vignette covers the Gotthard and San Bernardino road tunnels, but not the Great St Bernard and Munt la Schera tunnels or car-carrying trains, which are paid for separately.
Checking validity and expiry reminders
Before you set off, you can check whether a valid Swiss e-vignette is registered for your vehicle using the validity check on our website – just enter the licence plate and the country of registration, with no need to look for your order confirmation. If you also choose an email reminder when ordering, we will let you know in good time before the vignette expires. Because every Swiss vignette ends on 31 January, the reminder helps you arrange the next one before the old one runs out.
Flexible payment methods
Pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, QR code or bank transfer – whichever is most convenient for you. Payments are handled in a secure payment environment, and the full amount is shown before you confirm the order.
Two confirmations by email
As soon as your payment has gone through, you receive a payment confirmation by email. Once the Swiss e-vignette has been registered, a second email confirms the registration, including the licence plate and the validity period. Keep both messages – they serve as proof of your order and make it easy to check the details later if needed.
